What Is The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period And Who Is It For?

September 11th, 2022

Many of you are aware of the concept of Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) when it comes to Medicare. However, there is a lot of confusion about what it actually is, when it is, who it is for, what can be done during AEP, etc. Let’s dive in.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a time where Medicare enrollees can enroll, make changes or dis-enroll from their Medicare Advantage plans or Prescription Drug plans (PDP).

AEP takes place every year from October 15th through December 7th. All applications submitted during this period will have an effective date of January 1st of the coming year.

As mentioned, during AEP people can:

  • Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan.

  • Make a switch from one Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan to another.

  • Dis-enroll from a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan.

Please note that AEP is not for members enrolled in a Medicare Supplement plan, as changes for this type of plan can be done all year around.

The 2022 Annual Enrollment Period is coming up. Let our team know if you need help with your current coverage, want to see if your plan is still the best option for you or if you want to look at other plan options.
